Telecommunication has been rapidly undergoing many new developments globally. The global trend is for the international researchers and developers to rapidly learn the important changes in broader areas than one’s existing research area. Many top international researchers and developers are successful by often exploring and moving to new areas beyond their past as well as existing research area. These researchers and developers need to be able to change to fields of new interest and explore areas of importance to Africa and beyond. The MEng (Telecom) offers a selection of courses aimed to provide support for this global trend. This approach is planned to enable the student to be agile in response to new knowledge and novel developments.
Africa is viewed as the emerging telecommunications market and in that context it needs to grow its own expertise in designing state-of-the-art infrastructure, systems, services and applications that serve the needs of both domestic and global markets. The course offered in this programme are designed to be cognisant of appropriate solutions for the African continent, as well as giving students a more global perspective and understanding of the technologies concerned. This taught masters programme has been designed around an overarching objective of contributing towards steering Africa away from being a net consumer, and rather towards becoming a net producer; a producer of information and communication technology products. This can be achieved by teaching rigorous theoretical fundamentals combined with practical grounding in large systems and network design in the telecommunications field.
